I'm a first year college student and my current major is Film and Media Studies. I've heard time and again that film is not a stable career path, so I'm trying to find a double major. I'm very interested in neurobiology, but I don't know at what point I should actually decide to pursue it. It's a very important decision, but I need to make it quick. Any advice?

i would go with the thing you are most passionate about., that it the only way you are going to be happy in life. you spend 40 years working so make sure it is something you like to do.

Not a good idea to find that answer here....that's what college counselors ("Academic Advisors, if you will) are for.

My advice is to find out what are the first couple of classes you'd start out with in neurobiology. I guess they'd be just the basic intro biology for science majors. Take one of them and see how you like it. That way you are actually trying it out instead of just thinking about whether you'd like it or not. And if not you can always use it as an elective.

find a passion, and something that comes easy to you. I switched majors many times and i'm just going into my junior year of undergraduate school. I went from nursing to clinical laboratory science to radiology technology back to nursing and finally i've decided on psychology and now i'm pursuing the degree for it. I have one year left and this is the best major i've tried to go with. Medical wouldn't have worked out. . . too much math. so choose a major that doesn't have too much of a subject you struggle in, you'll just get more and more flustered and it'll be harder to focus. GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!!

Any reason why you have to decide quickly? Many college students change their majors multiple times and still graduate on time (ie: I changed my major 4 times and I am able to graduate 2 quarters early, with a good GPA). You shouldn't necessarily change your major just based on what other people say. What are you most interested in? Are you passionate enough about film and media that you would want to establish a career of it? If not, don't necessarily jump into a new major without researching what kind of jobs are available for certain majors. A certain major doesn't limit your career paths, so don't feel rushed, especially as a first-year.I'm a neuroscience major, and I have to tell you it's a ton of work.. so make sure that if you do switch you're very passionate about science and enjoy it! :)

I would guess that those two fields would be very difficult to double major in. The Film Studies degree probably takes up a lot of spare time. (I'm guessing...most arts type degrees require involvement with projects outside of classtime) Also I think if you are going to take the extra time to double major they should be two things that make you extra marketable (ie chemistry and neurobilogy) You should ultimately pursue what you are most passionate about, but neurobiology is obviously the more practical path. Depending on what you wanted to do with the Film degree you could probably succeed without it anyways. Good luck!

I know way too many people who have gotten artsy degrees, graduated, then not known what the heck to do next. Usually the next step is to work at a service job, and you can do that without a college degree. If Film and Media studies is something you are really passionate about, then go for it, but I think that it would be a really good idea to double major with something in the sciences, like you are thinking. Just be careful that you don't overwork yourself. Doing two such drastically different majors could really kill you. Maybe think of something in the sciences that reinforces the stuff you will be learning in Film and Media studies, or complements it.

When you decide in a major, it must be something that you will enjoy for the rest of your life. Here is how I decided my subject:1) the idea of psychology and music fascinates me2) I will work for FREE in the future in those areas3) You will always enjoy doing.
