I'm a first year college student and my current major is Film and Media Studies. I've heard time and again that film is not a stable career path, so I'm trying to find a double major. I'm very interested in neurobiology, but I don't know at what point I should actually decide to pursue it. It's a very important decision, but I need to make it quick. Any advice?I'm a current student at UC Irvine, and there are quite a few choices in the medical field

Wow...that is good but I don't think they have that as a major, do they? The classes simply are not diverse...or not at my school anyway. And my school is one of top 10 biggest in the nation (texas A&M) in terms of students. I think a more broad major is available say biochem, biology, microbiology. But definitely, go for it. The biology degree is so diverse. You can do so much with it. Med, Dent, Vet, Law, etc. So much so definitely pursue it. You really won't lose anything by doing it. Good luck.

Thanks to developments like the human genome project among many others, biology degrees are projected to a have a very bright future. If you believe you are interested in Neurobiology, and your school offers that as an undergrad course of study, you will probably need to start pursuing that course of study from the very beginning. The course load for that degree would be very challenging and would be best handled by being spread out over the entirety of you undergrad career. With careful planning, double majors can be accomplished, but it is usually a very difficult thing to accomplish. You might have to prepare yourself to spend a little longer in school to make this feasible. Most people who double major do it because there course load for their main degree already comes close to fulfilling the requirements in another degree. Spend some quality time with an adviser and take what they say seriously. It might be that you are better off pursuing one or the other as a minor. But whatever happens, good luck. They both sound like a lot of fun. It might even be that there is some way for you to combine the two degrees in your professional life. It would certainly be a rare combination.

As a Ph.D. in Neurobiology, I can tell you that the field is very competetive, and obtaining grant funding is getting more and more difficult. I ran a graduate program for 6 years, and at this point in time, I certainly wouldn't recommend this field to anyone who wants security in their job. On the other hand, if you can be successful in obtaining external funding, it is a very rewarding field of study, and it does have some perks, such as traveling around the world to conferences, etc., and probably the best thing is discovering new and exciting elements of the nervous system, and/or how drugs affect the brain. Good luck with whatever you decide to do, but I'm not sure that as a freshman in college you need to decide. But you should definitely take science courses in preparation, just in case (such as chem, biochem, physics, math, etc.)
